4 ABSTRACT: Anaerobic digestion (AD) of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) 5 is promoted as an energy source and more recently as a GHG mitigation measure. In this context, AD 6 systems operating at thermophilic temperatures (55-60C) – compared to mesophilic temperatures 7 (35-40C) – have the unique feature of producing hygienic soil conditioners with greater process 8 efficiency, higher energy yield and more GHG savings. Start-up of AD systems is often constrained 9 by the lack of acclimated seeds, leading to process instability and failure. This paper focuses on 10 strategies to startup thermophilic digesters treating OFMSW in the absence of acclimated seeds. It 11 examines constraints associated with process stability and ways to overcome them. Relevant gaps in 12 the literature and future research needs are delineated. 13 14
